After the Civil War, beautiful leather bound family Bibles were sold across the United States. This Douay Rheims Bible was published by William T. Amies at 1420 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia in 1865. It is 10 1/4 inches deep by 12 3/4 inches tall by 3 1/2 inches at the spine, and weighs about 10 pounds.
Approbation given at New York on March 28, 1865 that attests this edition is free from typographical errors and blemishes.
There is no writing in this Bible of family names or records. (The Approbation may have been signed by John ____ of New York. It may have been printed). The condition of the binding is very good for its age. The binding at the right edge needs mending. Brass clasps. The interior condition, likewise, is very good. Spotting. Numerous beautifully executed copper etched illustrations. Within the main text, the illustrations have tissue paper coverings in very fine condition.
Contents includes a Short Sketch of the Principal Epochs, which have a Relation to Scriptural History as they are set down by the best chronologers, an Admonition, a Letter from Pope Pius the Sixth, A Prayer Before Reading of Any Part of the Holy Scriptures, the Decree of the Council of Trent concerning the Canonical Scriptures, A Table of of All the Epistles and Gospels, an Illustrated Dictionary and Concordance (of the persons, places, and subjects occurring in the Sacred Scriptures) with 35,000 references and several hundred illustrations with a Preface by Rev. James O'Leary, D.D., Chronological Tables, and an Introduction to the Holy Bible. Includes Annotations, References, an Historical and Chronological Index to the Old Testament and the New Testament, and a Table of Offices and Condition of Men.
Of all of the historic family Bibles I have come across, this one stands out as rather fine.
