The Oxford Edition is our preferred translation for reading, because it reads itself. the text flows. The majesty and beauty of superb translation work and updating.
This is a BIG Bible. It is 15 inches tall, 10 1/2 inches wide, 3 inches thick at the spine, and weighs about 10 pounds. It is slightly bigger than most historic family Bibles. Printed on cream colored paper.
BACKGROUND
Dr. Benjamin Blayney was an Anglican clergy man and a Hebrew scholar. Blayney was commissioned to collate three existing sources of the Bible in English: the original 1611 King James Bible published in London, the 1701 Bishop Lloyd Bible published in Oxford, and the 1762 Parris revision of the 1611 published in Cambridge. By 1769, Blayney finished what Parris had worked on for 20 years, which was to identify and correct between 372 and 432 typographical errors,* standardize punctuation, make corrections, and update the spelling of standardized words based upon the 1755 edition of Dr. Samuel Johnson's Dictionary. The Blayney revision from Oxford remains the principal template for modern editions of the King James Version of the Bible in English. *(A Textual History of the King James Bible. By David Norton. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press).
Content includes The Translators to the Reader from 1611, a list of the contents that includes all of the Apocrypha as mandated by King James, and The Genealogies of the Holy Scriptures by John Speed, An Alphabetical Table of Canaan, and map of the Holy Land as well as a map of Jerusalem. Each page of the books of the Bible contain the year in which the narrative took place as developed by James Ussher. Cross references throughout appear only on the outside of the two columns, not in between columns giving this publication a remarkably streamlined appearance that is clean and easy on the eyes. In the back of the Bible is included An Index to the Holy Bible, A Table of Offices and Conditions of Men, and A Table of Time. Blayney added 30,495 additional cross references to the approximately 9,000 that existed in the 1611 first edition as first published.
Originally published by T. Wright and W. Gill, printers to Oxford University, and sold by R. Baldwin and S. Crowder, in Paternoster Row, London; and by W. Jackson in Oxford cum privilegio regiae majestatis and appointed to be read in Churches.
The 1769 revision is truly delightful, engaging, easy to read, and captivating. The text of the Bible is set in a Roman typeface. The long s appears like an f to the contemporary reader.
LEGACY
As best said by the History Channel, "Its majestic cadences would inspire generations of artists, poets, musicians and political leaders, while many of its specific phrases worked their way into the fabric of the language itself."
The King James Version democratized Protestantism, especially in the Bible Belt, where early American settlers had a distrust of the Anglican Church that had supported the crown of England. Anglicans, later Episcopalians, lost their political, religious, and cultural supremacy as the Puritans, Quakers, Presbyterians, Methodists, and Baptists made use of the King James Bible.
Whether a collector, a purist, or devoted to the majesty of the language of the King James, this Bible is a a treasure and a keeper. Easy on the eyes, clear and crisp details, a pleasure to read.
If you are looking for the real thing, go back to the original, and invest in a real bible in a real period binding in genuine leather.
